Job title: Mining Engineer

Job summary:

Design, plan, and oversee safe, efficient extraction of minerals and ores from surface and underground mines. Optimize mine operations, ensure regulatory and environmental compliance, manage costs and risks, and support production targets.

Key responsibilities:

• Design mine plans and layouts (open-pit and/or underground) using geological data and mine design software.

• Develop production schedules, ore/waste sequencing, and cut-off grades to meet targets.

• Conduct resource/reserve estimation and mine feasibility studies in collaboration with geologists.

• Select and specify mining methods, equipment, and processing flowsheets.

• Prepare cost estimates, budgets, and economic evaluations; monitor and control operational costs.

• Oversee mine development, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and material handling operations.

• Implement and monitor health, safety, and environmental management systems; enforce regulatory compliance.

• Optimize ventilation, ground support, dewatering, and slope stability for safe operations.

• Coordinate maintenance, equipment procurement, and contractor performance.

• Manage staffing, training, and shift scheduling for engineering and operations teams.

• Produce technical reports, permits, and documentation; liaise with regulators, stakeholders, and community.

• Apply mine planning software (e.g., Vulcan, Surpac, Minesight, Datamine) and data analytics to improve performance.

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives and mine rehabilitation/closure planning.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or related engineering discipline; Master’s preferred for senior roles.

• Professional engineering licensure where required (PE, CEng, Eur Ing, etc.).

• 2+ years industry experience for junior roles; 5+ years for senior/lead roles (varies by employer).

• Experience with mine design and scheduling software and geological modeling.

Technical skills:

• Mine planning and design, reserve estimation, geotechnical principles.

• Blasting and rock mechanics basics, ventilation design, dewatering systems.

• Equipment selection and fleet management, production optimization.

• Cost modeling, budgeting, and economic analysis.

• Proficient with CAD/GIS tools, mine planning software, and MS Office; familiarity with data analysis tools (Python, R) a plus.

Soft skills:

• Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.

• Leadership and team coordination under operational pressures.

• Clear written and verbal communication; ability to prepare technical reports.

• Attention to safety, detail-oriented, adaptable to field conditions.

• Stakeholder engagement and project management skills.

Working conditions:

• Field work at surface or underground sites; exposure to remote locations, shift work, and varying weather.

• Combination of office-based planning and on-site supervision; travel to sites and between operations common.

• Physical demands and strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols.

Performance metrics:

• Safety record (LTIFR, incident rates), production vs. plan, ore recovery/yield, operating cost per tonne, equipment utilization, schedule adherence, reserve replacement and project ROI.
